Results of HBV Serologic Markers, HBV-PCR and HCV-PCR in Anti-HCV Positive Sera

Abstract
Background:
The prevalence of chronic liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatoma is very high in Korea which is known to be an endemic area of hepatitis B virus infection. And the positive rate of newly introduced anti-HCV test
of
hepatitis C virus was not low The possibility of superinfection or coinfection of HBV and HCV was speculated.
methods:
Both viral markers of HBV and HCV were performed simultaneously in 72 chronic hepatitis patients. Of chronic hepatitis patients, we screened anti-HCV by EIA and in anti-HCV positive 72 sera we screened HBV serologic markers, such as HBsAg,
anti-HB,
anti-HBs by EIA and also performed HBV-PCR and HCV-PCR.
Results:
In 72 anti-HCV positive cases, 67 cases were negative in all of HBV serologic markers and any one marker positive cases were 5/72 (6.9%). Among those cases HBsAg or anti-HBc positive cases were 2/72 (2.8%). HCV-PCR was positive in 65/67(97.0%)
of
anti-HCV positive samples. Only one case (1.4%) was both HBV-PCR and HCV-PCR positive, of which laboratory findings were HBsAg(-), HBeAg(-), anti-HBc(+), anti-HBe(-) anti-HBs(-) and ALT 56 IU/mL.
Conclusions:
The positive rate for both HBV-PCR and HCV-PCR was 1.4% in anti-HCVpositive 72 chronic hepatitis patients.
